Current prediction is that when Rail Baltica is ready it’ll cost more than flying and it’ll also be way slower. It’s like a 3 hour flight to get to Germany vs more than likely all day on the train in a decade or two when it’s actually ready (deadline is 2030, which is now said to mean 2040 or later).

The rest of us first have to fly or drive there before we can even take the train and even when the railway is built it needs to turn a profit because the project is so expensive. For anything longer than 1-2 hour flights, you kinda do. Trains need infrastructure for every line, whereas planes need infrastructure at the start and destination airports. You can’t have direct train connections between as many cities as we have direct flight connections, and for long routes trains currently cost more than flying because flying is way too cheap as it is. Jet fuel needs to be taxed way more.

Whereabouts do you live then? In my corner, trains and planes are used for completely different routes. We already don’t use planes much if you just need to go to Latvia or an example, most people will just sit on the bus for 5 hours rather than flying 1 because the bus is cheaper.
