True, but it does tend to be a few countries with support from the EU. We don’t really get private companies bank rolling the railroad, at least where I come from.

For anything longer than 1-2 hour flights, you kinda do. Trains need infrastructure for every line, whereas planes need infrastructure at the start and destination airports. You can’t have direct train connections between as many cities as we have direct flight connections, and for long routes trains currently cost more than flying because flying is way too cheap as it is. Jet fuel needs to be taxed way more.
And i live no where near central EU.
Whereabouts do you live then? In my corner, trains and planes are used for completely different routes. We already don’t use planes much if you just need to go to Latvia or an example, most people will just sit on the bus for 5 hours rather than flying 1 because the bus is cheaper.
