Couldn’t happen to a nicer person.

However it means Trump accidentally did something right, which will make him even more insufferable. And he might get ideas of doing it to other countries.

You mean Maduro’s boots? There’s a reason 90% of Venezuelans out there are celebrating regardless of what happens next. Taking out a dictator is a good thing even if it ends in civil war.

There are around 29M citizens in Venezuela. And around 330,000 people of Venezuelans decent in Florida. Even if 100% of the ladder agreed, that wouldn’t even account for 1.5% of the Venezuelan population. Why does their opinion matter more than that of the 29M people who are actually there?

You’re getting downvoted, but what I’ve heard of the occasion is basically this. It’s upsetting because Trump absolutely did something horrendous - but this time to a horrendous person. It’s definitely a case of him trying to apply abuses to justify abuses.

Would you describe China attacking North Korea or Cambodia or another SE Asian dictatorship to depose their leadership as “accidentally doing something right”?

People dragging you for supporting the fall of North Korea is some unhinged tankie shit.

Stay sane; ignore the .ml brigade.

              That’s a truly bad-faith take.

My stance is that anyone who supports the sovereignty of the Kim Jong Un regime is a tankie.

The how does matter. You can appreciate the removal of a despot and still oppose unilateral regime change by force–especially one so explicitly motivated by resource exploitation. This is very different from the UN-sanctioned and NATO-led intervention that deposed Gaddafi.

I completely agree with you on all of those points. The present Venezuela invasion is totally heinous in my book.

Acting like Xi invading North Korea is the same thing as VZ is where I totally disagree with you.

Assuming the Chinese were to make a modicum of effort to prevent mass famine, I see the possible humanitarian boon as outweighing the international-relations consequences. Or to frame it differently, the crimes against humanity that North Korea has committed give China a valid casus belli.

How can we justify staying in Venezuela?

Calling for immediate snap elections, then returning Maduro for trial in Venezuela? Okay. That’d be one thing.

      But basically annexing the country?

Staying would be a really, really bad idea. Venezuelans massively hate Maduro, but a military occupation would be a different thing. The best course of action would be to allow Edmundo González, the closest thing to a legitimately elected president, to return and take over leadership until further political reform can be done, followed by new elections.

Unfortunately this is Trump we’re talking about. He’ll find a way to fuck it up no doubt.
