The second collapse was to a great part also due to chernobyl. It’s economic consequences often get overlooked. They had to use a LOT of resources and military personnel to contain it and preventing half of eastern Europe becoming unliveable wastelands.

How is a nuclear meltdown not the fault of nuclear power? Of course you can prevent it by being super careful and stuff, but it is inherent to nuclear power that it is super dangerous. What is the worst that can happen with a wind turbine? It falls, that’s it.

Which makes me worried. A country with a declining economy but the largest military in the world is almost certain to project its inner problems outwards in form of war. The best the world can hope for is another civil war inside the US.

But how many people are willing to risk their life without immediate danger to themselves (yet)?
