  • That’s not what the special elections are showing. In last years special elections, Democrats have gained, on average, 14 points in districts that Trump won. Miami elected a Democratic mayor for the first time in 30 years. At the beginning of 2025, people were wondering if Republicans could hold on to the House. In 2026, they’re speculating on whether or not Democrats will retake the Senate.

And this is all happening while Democrats have hit historically low approval ratings. Only 18% of voters approve of the job they’re doing in Congress, including -6% approval in their own party. And still, voters want Democrats in charge of Congress, 47% to 43%. People hate Democrats more than they have ever hated Democrats in the history of Democrats, and they are still hate Trump more.

  • $40 billion was the entire annual budget of USAID. No matter what you think of them, they did provided essential aid to dozens of nations, and DOGE destroyed them under the pretense of lowering the deficit. Now we’re spending that much money just to prop up one countries economy.

(Yes, I know they USAID is a soft-power tool of American imperialism, and is rumored to have been used as cover for CIA operations, but they also did a shit-load of global AIDs prevention work, and I’d rather have spent the $40 billion on that than bailing out a libertarian freak so Rob Citrone can get rich.)

  • I don’t think that’s true. I think the MAGAs have lived in such a comfortable bubble of American privilege that they don’t understand the implications of all this. They’re used to making jokes about Canada, “basically being the U.S.,” and having free and easy travel on the border that they don’t think about the fact that it’s a sovereign nation with it’s own culture and interests. I think they see this as politicians arguing, not America becoming a hostile foreign power.

Even the administration doesn’t seem to get this. They just had to cancel a, “cultural,” visit from the Second Lady to Greenland because both the government and public told them they were unwelcome. Apparently, they’re so steeped in American privilege (and probably used to people dismissing Trump ramblings as, “bluster,” or, “hot air,”) that it didn’t occur to them that you can’t just make a fun, friendly visit to a country the President threatened to invade.
