  • Yes, it’s not a counter point but rather an also important parallel discussion. We need to have higher standards for male role models, or we will continue to have incels fill the space.

I feel like it’s awfully interesting though that we have ‘parallel discussions’ whenever someone says “hey this specific thing sucks for women.” The original question posited here was:

Why do males complain about female-led stories or too many female characters when the majority are still dominated by males?

The question is why do men complain about female leads, which they do, when the majority of leads are still male, which they are. The answer to that isn’t “we need better male role models in movies” (though it would obviously help as well) as it’s dodging the original question.

  • First, I’m confused as to why you’d need to segregate books and film by gender, these all have either a male or non-gendered lead: Captain Underpants, Nate the Great, Hal The 3rd Class Hero, The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings, Treasure Island, Danny the Champion of the World, The Outsiders, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Percy Jackson (all 40 billion of the series), The Giving Tree, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Bridge to Terabithia, James and the Giant Peach, Holes (series), Where The Wild Things Are, The Heroes of Olympus (more Percy Jackson I think), Ender’s Game, Winnie The Pooh, Narnia (series), The Wind In The Willows, The Indian in the Cupboard, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Neverending Story, I Am Every Good Thing, Don’t Hug Doug (He Doesn’t Like it), King Arthur’s Very Great Grandson, A Wizard of Earthsea, The Wild Robot (series), Stuart Little, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Lord of The Flies, Calvin and Hobbes (series), The Dangerous Book for Boys, The American Boys Handy Book.

(You didn’t specify age, so I tried to add our family suggestions for about 4-12. Once he’s older, depending on your thoughts on the language, we also have a lot of suggestions for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn)

  • People are falling for Chinese Propaganda, sadly.

She was a massive thorn in the side of the Soviet Union, and both the CCP and Russia are terrified of her.

Freeland studied Russian history and literature at Harvard University.[18] During 1988–89, she was an exchange student at the Taras Shevchenko State University of Kyiv in Soviet Ukraine, where she studied Ukrainian, which she is fluent in.[20] While there, she worked with journalist Bill Keller of The New York Times to document the Bykivnia graves, an unmarked mass grave site where the NKVD (the Soviet secret police) disposed of tens of thousands of dissidents.[1] The official Soviet story held that the graves were the result of Nazi atrocities. She translated the stories of locals who had witnessed covered trucks and “puddles of blood in the road” that predated the Nazi invasion, adding evidence that the site was actually the result of Stalinist repression.[1]

While there she attracted the attention of the KGB, which tagged her with the code name “Frida”, and Soviet newspapers, who attacked her as a foreigner meddling in their internal affairs over her contacts with Ukrainian activists. The KGB surveilled Freeland and tapped her phone calls, and documented the young Canadian activist delivering money, video and audio recording equipment, and a personal computer to contacts in Ukraine. She used a diplomat at the Embassy of Canada in Moscow to send material abroad in a secret diplomatic pouch, worked with foreign journalists on stories about life in the Soviet Union, and organized marches and rallies to attract attention and support from Western countries. On her return from a trip to London in March 1989, Freeland was denied re-entry to the Soviet Union.[21] By the time her activism within Ukraine came to an end, Freeland had become the subject of a high-level case study from the KGB on how much damage a single determined individual could inflict on the Soviet Union; a 2021 Globe and Mail article quoted the report by a former officer of the KGB, which had described Freeland as “a remarkable individual”, “erudite, sociable, persistent, and inventive in achieving her goals”.[21]

It doesn’t help that we won’t elect a woman though, or basically anyone who isn’t a white man. I say all of this as an NDP voter, she would make me consider an ABC vote.

  • Yes, and I’m showing that the action they were forced into was so small as to be essentially meaningless. So, that undermines their accomplishments, wouldn’t you say?

Not for the people who use it? You know, our poorest people?

All our lives? Again, is this dental plan open to everyone?

So just to be clear, no party has done anything ever because it didn’t impact every single citizen? What the hell is this insane criterion?

This is the least Canadian response I’ve ever heard, where help is useless unless every person gets something. I don’t care if it ‘only’ helped poor children, it was a massive achievement and worth doing.

    Una mattina mi sono alzato

O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao

    Una mattina mi sono alzato

    E ho trovato l’invasor

    O partigiano, portami via

O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao

    O partigiano, portami via

    Ché mi sento di morir

E se io muoio da partigiano

O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao

E se io muoio da partigiano

    Tu mi devi seppellir

    E seppellire lassù in montagna

O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao

    E seppellire lassù in montagna

Sotto l’ombra di un bel fior

    Tutte le genti che passeranno

O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao

    E le genti che passeranno

    Mi diranno: “Che bel fior”

E questo è il fiore del partigiano

O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao

Questo è il fiore del partigiano

    Morto per la libertà

E questo è il fiore del partigiano

    Morto per la libertà

  • “okay but women not wanting to date men is just overreacting” - a sentiment we see even here on fucking Lemmy.

We’ve dodged a lot of the usual garbage from Reddit over here, but that one definitely stuck around. The only negative comments I’ve received on any of my lemmy accounts are guys furious when you point out men are more violent partners. Like they just cannot admit that as a society the ‘boys will be boys’ mentality was used to allow a lot of awful behaviours like rape. Hell, Revenge of The Nerds has a rape scene in it and people only recently started to speak out against it.

So, sorry for the downvotes, but at least we all know it’s a bunch of insecure men. Maybe they’ll learn, maybe they won’t, but you have allies here in the mean time.
