  • I peaked hard on Halo. I wish I had the gear/inclination to start a YouTube channel for it. Back in those days YouTube wasn’t the high-paying career it is today, and i was convinced it would be a waste of money to get the gear required to start one.

I’ve properly grown up since then though, and now im nowhere near the best at any video game. I often wonder how different life would be if I’d managed to just sit at home playing games every day and be a near millionaire from it.

  • Recurring theme, hard to pick the scariest, but there’s a shape-shifter after me, like the liquid terminator or something. I know what it is, it thinks I know but might not be able to catch me. It tries to get close to me while I try to get away without letting on that I know. Really socially tense and my life is on the line.

Scariest one was the first time I remember having it. My dad took the dog for a big walk and drove off in the car. A couple minutes later my dad walks in the house without a car, staring eye contact at me, absolutely neutral expression, and walking slowly towards me. I ask where the dog is and he doesnt even respond, just walks back out the room and reappears immediately with the dog on the lead, also staring at me. I don’t remember how that one ends, but they got more convoluted and cat-and-mousey after that. Sometimes I got away and sometimes it caught me and stabbed me up.

Now any time anyone starts acting strange around me I always pinch my nose to see if im dreaming. I haven’t had that dream for about 15 years but it sticks with me.

  • If we’re including video games im gonna say mass effect. I didn’t give 2 enough of a chance because at the end of ME1 the entire known universe bands together to defeat a single big-bad ship and it’s a fully annihilating battle where the good guys barely scrape by. Then thousands of the big-bads turn up at once and the credits roll. Its a devastating ending that really drives home the central themes.

Then in ME2 your guy(orgirl) just wakes up in hospital after the battle? No chance. I just couldn’t get past it long enough to give it a chance. I still have them and I know I should but…

  • It bugs me a little bit how little belief people have in machines potential. The machines have done what “only humans can do and a machine will never” so many times.

They would never beat a human at chess, until they did.

They would never pass the Turing test, until they did.

They would never create art, until they did.

They would never create music, until they did.

They would never be able to actually drive a car, until they did.

Why do we draw the line at skilled work?

  • Not really. In the UK for hourly employees the employer handles all that before you even get your paycheque. When it’s payday you have a big breakdown in the slip on what’s gone to various taxes and stuff, but you skip all of that and just look at the number that says what’s going in your bank.

If I was self employed, or won the lottery or something I would probably be a little pissed off about the concept.

  • Or what would he expect someone to do? The best you can do is share information, information that you’ve been simply told yourself. Every time I’ve tried to express the opinion that “yeah that’s not OK” I end up bombarded with whataboutism and do you even begin to comprehend the previous 3000 years of history and how dare you have an opinion when you didn’t even consider why they’re doing it etc etc etc.

By the end I just give up. I can’t even be sure Israel actually exists. It’s on maps. People talk about it. I haven’t actually been there and verified it’s real, never mind what goes on over that way.

Turns out all you can actually do is keep your own little world clean.
