For anyone too young to know, he’s checking the coin return of the pay phone for change.
Also he used to be depicted as changing clothes from Clark Kent to Superman inside a phone booth; because phone booths were once a ubiquitous thing in any urbanized area.
Come to think of it - even by the Christopher Reeve movie, that was a relic they turned into a joke. He goes to quick-change in a phonebooth and can only find a streetside kiosk. The actual costume change happens by zipping around a revolving door.
This one got a genuine laugh.
