Instead they have decoupled the demage from their war with China. It’s strategic, like the war with Iran was prepared with the regime change in Syria, so that, with less supplies, the damage from Hamas is now limited.
I don’t think that the plan was to just kill the leader. The democratic regime change failed, there was no momentum. I think they want to keep Iran in that state of war, but with less success for Iran.
