The Dominican Republic says it plans to deport up to 10,000 undocumented migrants a week to combat uncontrolled migration.
The plan was announced by President Luis Abinader’s spokesman, Homero Figueroa, who blamed the international community’s slow response to months of gang violence in neighbouring Haiti and its failure to restore stability.
Tens of thousands of Haitians have fled across the border into the Dominican Republic.
You don’t move that many people without killing a lot of them and scarring the rest for life.
I suspect that is a sacrifice DR is willing to take.
You’re 100% right. There is no way this action doesn’t cause harm.
That said, what should they do?
Document the undocumented, provide what they need to start a new life in the country, use their labor, stop using migrants and refugees as scapegoats.
The history of that Island, the stark differences between Haiti and the DR, is just painful.
Yeah man. Sigh. Just let some of these grudges and shit rest already, it’s been more than a few lifelines for some of them.
Jesus christ I didn’t think there were 10,000 people living in DR. It’s not that much area.
10,760,028 as of 2022. Between Portugal and Czechia, or about the size of North Carolina.

Yeah but like half the size of NC isn’t it?
Less than half the size. NJ is around half the size of the DR by area with two million fewer people
Density high in cities, low in mountains and farmland. Still takes many hours to cross from north to south.
