Ionizing radiation apparently didn’t prevent some types of bacteria from breeding in the water, but astonishingly, they are not the radiation-resistant types expected in an environment like this.

    Tldr: some types of unexpected non-radioactive resistant bacteria are thriving in the radioactive environment. Additionally the bacteria are causing corrosion and so are being studied for decommissioning radioactive things.
